Our Favorite Austin Eats

Liana Del Pizzo

June 24, 2014

TBD

Austin, Texas, is a mecca of gut-busting barbecue, authentic fresh Mexican cuisine, and out-of-this-world food trucks. That’s why we at Cater2.me are so excited about our new Austin office launch!

In honor of our first week, we wanted to share some of our favorite Austin eats and some gratuitous, mouth-watering food pics from our staff. Thanks for welcoming us to the neighborhood, Austin. We can’t wait to feed your employees some grub as awesome as you are!

Food Trucks

Austin’s food trucks are as plentiful as they are unique. At many spots across the city, you’ll find food truck parks filled with different types of cuisines – like Thai crepes, custom grilled cheese, and meatloaf.

Tacos

Migas Taco and Fried Avocado Taco

With the motto “Damn Good Tacos,” Torchy’s Tacos takes its product seriously. For breakfast, we love the migas taco: fried tortilla strips cooked into scrambled eggs, served with green chilies, avocado, pico, and shredded cheese. For a local vegetarian specialty, try the fried avocado taco with refried beans.

If you’re feeling a bit adventurous, The Peached Tortilla’s twist on the taco will definitely excite your taste buds. Their menu is a fusion of Asian and traditional Southern cuisines, ranging from sliders to specialty hot dogs. For brisket lovers, their BBQ Brisket Taco with creamy apple slaw and peach BBQ sauce is a must-try.

Voted “Austin’s Weirdest Restaurant” by National Geographic Kids, Gourdoughs is doing unholy things with donuts. A clever play on the word “gordo,” which means fat in Spanish, Gourdoughs’ donut concoctions are as crazy as they are filling. The Mother Clucker starts with one of Gourdoughs’ hot glazed donuts and adds a strip of fried chicken and melting honey butter. This is not for the faint of heart – or stomach.

Ever thought a grilled cheese could be more than just a grilled cheese? Burro Cheese Kitchen changes any of your preconceived childhood ideas of what a grilled cheese really is. The Waylon & Willie is a must-try, but you can also build your own grilled cheese, depending on what you are craving!

BBQ

While we appreciate the authentic barbecue experience of Franklin’s, we haven’t had time yet to wait on that crazy line. For a BBQ experience that doesn’t take quite as long, head to Lambert’s, which bills itself as “fancy barbecue.” Start with a bowl of smooth queso and fried tortilla chips, and then dive head-first into brown sugar and coffee rub brisket and maple glazed pork ribs. Don’t miss out on a side of Lambert’s baked mac and three cheeses, if you can still breathe.

If you find yourself on the Eastside, check out Micklethwait Craft Meats. This up-and-coming BBQ food truck has everything from brisket to homemade sausage. Their unique take on traditional BBQ sides complements any meal. Definitely make sure to request bread and the fixings; they bake their white bread daily!

Dessert

We’ve seen a lot of “Keep Austin Weird” paraphernalia, and Amy’s Ice Cream is doing a fantastic job of upholding this tradition. With wild colors and child-like artwork adorning the walls, Amy’s is like an alternate universe of alien creatures. Their bestseller, the Mexican Vanilla, is anything but plain. Mexican vanilla beans are stronger and sweet than regular vanilla, and when mixed with a sweet cream base, create the perfect-frosty treat to beat Austin’s heat.

For a revolutionary dessert, try out a chocolate-covered banana from Bananarchy. With different dips and toppings, the possibilities are endless. You will definitely be able to curb any craving, whether sweet or salty. A personal favorite is a banana dipped in peanut butter with graham cracker toppings!
