Cater2.me in DC

Over the past three years, we’ve had the privilege of serving meals to innovators in Silicon Valley, multinational corporations in the Big Apple, and members of the Windy City’s startup scene. Now, we’re preparing our palates for our next destination: Washington DC!

There are many reasons that drew us to DC. The city is a hub of political activity, a stomping ground for our country’s most influential pastimes, and a center for the thriving government and business sectors. Most significantly, it is home to an equally colorful emerging food scene.

The king of classic DC dishes is Ben’s Chili Bowl‘s Chili Half Smoke. It’s a quarter-pound of half pork and beef smoked sausage, on a steamed bun with onions, mustard, and chili sauce. In DC, it has become synonymous with Obama’s first public dining experience shortly after his inauguration.

Endless ethnic options also abound, including Dim Sum dumplings from Toki Underground and amazing stuffed pitas from Amsterdam Falafel Shop. Adding to the flowering culinary scene, the Brooklyn-based operators of Smorgasburg and Brooklyn Flea will open their first location in DC in mid-September.

Just as in New York, we’ll be on hand to help connect local food purveyors and area businesses. We’re proud to list among our partners Luke’s Lobster, a food truck that serves Maine-quality lobster rolls, and Dangerously Delicious Pies, a shop that bakes lethally decadent desserts and criminally tasty savory pies.

We’ve been in DC since the beginning of the summer, searching for eats that please both sides of the aisle. If we know anything from our other offices, it’s that food brings people together at a common table. DC has struggled to remain bipartisan amid competing parties and opinions. However, maybe all that’s needed for everyone to make amends is an amazing meal. As Tina Fey’s Liz Lemon puts it, “All of humankind has one thing in common: the sandwich. I believe that all anyone really wants in this life is to sit in peace and eat a sandwich.”

The Washington Post talked to Cater2.me’s co-founder Alex Lorton about a launch that is certain to get Virginia, Maryland, and DC buzzing. Check out the announcement within this week’s “Capital Buzz” column.
