San Francisco Street Food

Ben Lauzier

June 11, 2012

TBD

Street food is a trend that won’t die any time soon. Food truck and pop-up offerings have actually doubled in San Francisco over the last six months. There are now even websites devoted to tracking food trucks – like Roaming Hunger, Trux Map and SF Gate.

Luckily for us, there are two new hot spots where mobile vendors assemble for our eating pleasure: SoMa StrEat Food Park and Food Social.

SoMa StrEat Food

SoMa StrEat Food Park

SoMa StrEat Food Park officially opened last Wednesday, June, as a permanent location for up to ten food trucks daily. Despite a somewhat-isolated location on 11th street and Harrison, the park buzzes all day because of its excellent food carts, seating, and great amenities. Patrons enjoy a wide variety of options, from snacks to full meals and dessert, all under one roof, so to speak.

I was lucky enough to be welcomed by some of my food truck favorites: Curry Up Now, Sunrise Deli, and Adam’s Grub Truck. There were also unique food pairings, such as sausages and ice cream or Irish and Eritrean food (at EireTrea).

Food Social

Food Social offers a very different scene. Just think of what food trucks were like before they had trucks. They were scrappy, passionate chefs trying to edge into the scene with competitive pop-up locations and word of mouth. At Circolo Lounge this past Saturday, these chefs were given the chance to serve a larger audience and to raise awareness about their unique offerings. If food trucks excite you, check out this event. You’ll be a step ahead in the street food scene.
